Dental Cleanings

At Eastern Slope Dental

Keeping your teeth clean is more than maintaining a bright smile, it’s about preserving your oral health. A regular dental cleaning at Eastern Slope can help keep your smile healthy and vibrant. Beyond aesthetics, these cleanings play a vital role in preventing cavities and tooth loss by removing plaque build-up that regular brushing might miss.

A routine dental cleaning at Eastern Slope Dental helps to ensure that your teeth and gums are in their best possible condition. Before starting your dental cleaning, one of Dr. Mulandi’s hygienists will use a small mirror to inspect your mouth.

They then use an instrument called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from between your teeth and around your gum line. Tartar, which consists of hard deposits of bacteria on the teeth, requires a professional dentist or hygienist to remove.

Once our hygienist is satisfied that they have removed all tooth tartar, the next step is to use a high-powered electric toothbrush to clean them.

The taste and feel of the toothpaste is similar to what you’re accustomed to at home, but it’s of a stronger quality. The toothpaste has a gritty sensation that allows your dental hygienist to scrub your teeth at a deeper level than you can with typical toothpaste at home.

Following the cleaning, they will professionally polish your teeth. Just maintain your regular home care regimen and a bi-annual professional polishing should be adequate for most people.

Our hygienist also flosses your teeth and makes note of any problems such as bleeding gums. Before Dr. Mulandi comes in to inspect your mouth, your hygienist applies a fluoride treatment that remains on your teeth for approximately one minute. Your dental hygienist places a mouthpiece containing fluoride onto your teeth so they receive the full benefit of fluoride. You can choose from one of several flavors.

We recomend that patients come in twice a year for cleanings and have x-rays taken at least once a year. Depending on what we see on the X-ray, you may want to schedule another appointment for follow-up work. If everything looks fine, we’ll look forward to seeing you in about six months.

Dental Cleaning FAQs

A dental cleaning is a professional appointment where your hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth and around your gums. This process keeps your mouth healthy, prevents decay, and leaves your smile feeling fresh and smooth. It also allows your dentist to check for any early signs of gum disease, cavities, or other concerns. Regular professional cleanings complement your at-home routine and help you maintain a brighter, healthier smile.

Fitting securely over your teeth, they are more comfortable than traditional metal braces, which may poke out and stick the inside of your cheek.

Regular cleanings help prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath while supporting overall health, as oral health is closely connected to heart and immune function. Skipping cleanings can allow plaque and tartar to build up, leading to problems that require more complex care later. Having your teeth cleaned every six months keeps your mouth in top shape and makes it easier to spot issues early. Consistent visits also help you feel more confident about your smile’s appearance and freshness.

Your hygienist will review your medical and dental history, examine your gums and teeth, and remove any plaque or tartar using specialized tools. Then your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains, and you’ll receive personalized home-care advice tailored to your needs. The cleaning is gentle, and most patients find it relaxing and refreshing. You’ll leave the appointment with teeth that feel cleaner and smoother than ever.

Perhaps best of all, unlike metal braces, you need not come in for frequent adjustments that sometimes result in pain and discomfort.

Most patients benefit from cleanings every six months, but your dentist may recommend more frequent visits if you have gum issues, braces, or other oral health concerns. The frequency is personalized based on your dental health, lifestyle, and risk factors. Some people may need quarterly visits to keep gum disease under control, while others can maintain results with twice-yearly appointments. Staying consistent with your schedule helps you avoid major problems and keeps your smile strong for life.

Before your cleaning, brush and floss as usual, and let your dental team know about any discomfort or changes in your mouth. Afterward, your teeth may feel ultra-smooth, and your mouth will feel refreshed, with noticeably brighter results. Some people experience mild gum sensitivity, which usually fades within a day. Following your dentist’s tips—like using fluoride toothpaste and maintaining daily care—helps extend that clean feeling for months.
